The Digital Age & the Drop in Newspaper Advertising

Charles Merrell    2012

The New Orleans Times Picayune went to a 3 day per week publishing ?

Newspaper ad revenues for 1950 were just under $20 billion.  Last year’s ad revenues slipped to $21 billion - less than half of the $46 billion of 2007. See below.

Digital forms of advertising are eating away at the ad revenues of print media, especially newspapers.  Ad revenues in 2000 were $64 billion so in 7 years there was a 30% drop. In the last decade (from 2000 - 2010) there was a 33% total decrease in ad revenues.  This spells the death knell for newspapers as we’ve known them.  They will first evolve, then will probably go the way of the cassette tape, the 78 & 33 vinyl record.
